Sibylla Kiddle School - Grade 4 Class

Students created Andy Warhol-inspired self portraits using sharpie and acrylic paint on acetate. Exploring how portraiture can be both representational and expressive in telling their autobiographical stories. Students were introduced to Pop Art and Warhol's artistic processes including photography, reproduction and layering to inform their own work. To develop their skills, students learned about tracing as a tool in art, the basics of colour theory and essential acrylic painting techniques, including proper use of painting tools. Through layering vibrant colours and bold outlines they created dynamic self-portraits that reflect both their personal identities and the stylistic influences of Warhol's Pop Art.

Sibylla Kiddle School - Grade 4 Classes

Led a residency with two grade 4 classes in which students explored groups of people important to Alberta's history and current populations including their own identity through material-based artmaking and personal weaving practice. Students examined the global history of weaving as both a technology and art form, building conceptual connections between cultural representation, human history and creative expression. Through guided exploration of materiality, students learned how sensory qualities and cultural associations inform artistic choices. The residency culminated in hands-on instruction in weaving tools and foundational techniques, grounding conceptual learning in practical skill development.

Sibylla Kiddle School - Grade 2 Class

Facilitated a workshop with a grade 2 class focused on expressing their own personal affirmations and growth through colour, line and movement. Students explored layered mark making on opaque, translucent and transparent surfaces using a range of drawing and watercolour painting materials and processes. We studied how Abstract Expressionist artists moved away from physical subject matter to communicate feelings and identity and learned foundational colour theory, while discussing universal, cultural and personal meanings associated with colour. Through examining contemporary mixed media art, students discovered how combining materials and techniques can create rich visual connections and expressive artworks that reflect the complexity of the artist behind them.

Sibylla Kiddle School - Grade 1 Classes

Delivered a workshop for two Grade 1 classes that celebrated the relationships and classroom community built over the school year through collaborative art making processes. Students learned fundamental watercolour techniques and introductory colour theory, exploring how colour can express emotion, culture and memory to create a visual sense of self. Each student painted expressive papers then cut and shared their pieces with each of their peers, fostering connection and reciprocity. Using their collected papers, students made intentional compositional choices to create abstract "nests" symbolizing the supportive community they had built and nurtured together.

Led an art residency with two grade 1 classes focused on deepening understanding of  living things through observational drawing and connecting scientific and artistic ways of seeing.  Students practiced foundational observational skills and mixed media materials to study the physical structures and characteristics of root vegetables. By looking closely at shapes, texture and detail, students created realistic drawings using layered colour mixing, varied hues and shading. The residency culminated in students designing mixed media garden compositions that demonstrated their understanding of which vegetable structures grow above or below ground through intentional compositional choices.

2023-2024

Sibylla Kiddle School - Grade 3 Class

In this project, students engaged in the destruction and construction processes of collage to visually retell their fractured fairy tales. By deconstructing and reassembling imagery, they deepened their understanding of literary elements while developing their visual literacy. The lesson introduced students to the history of collage, examining how both historical and contemporary artists use collage to express ideas and narratives in innovative ways. Students explored the nine elements of art as tools for storytelling, making connections between the elements of narrative (character, setting, conflict etc. ) and the elements of art (line, colour, texture etc.) to build compelling compositions. Students also learned how to use visual organizers and material collections to plan their artwork.

Sibylla Kiddle School - Kindergarten Projects

Plasticine landscape painting on paper plates. Connecting to Earth Day learning, the story "Aba Wathtech Ina Makoche: It is a Good Day, Mother Earth", and discussions about parts of the earth students are grateful for. Students used plasticine in a new and interesting way to create depictions of their favourite parts of the natural world. How can shape, colour, texture and layering be used to create a landscape were explored.

Mixed media weaving on cardboard looms. Students were learning to use their five senses to build descriptive vocabulary. To connect with this learning they explored the senses of sight and touch to describe a variety of materials used to create their weavings. Repeating patterns (over, under, over, under etc.), hand-eye coordination and focus were also practiced to create their artwork.

Monoprint snowflakes with tempera on cardstock. Students explored the visual characteristics of snowflakes through careful observation of Wilson 'Snowflake' Bentley's photographs and the reductive practice of mono-printing. Fine motor drawing skills and building new procedural knowledge in art and managing expectations in artmaking are practiced.

Collaborative class mixed painting using sharpies layered on a base of acrylic paint. Students learn to share space, make use of each other's mark making to inform their own and employee colour, shape and line to create a visually cohesive artwork.

Sibylla Kiddle School - Kindergarten Centers

Process art drawing game encouraging students to draw the first thing that comes to mind from two descriptive language prompts. Colour, line, shape, repetition, numbers, composition, speed and simple subject matter are experimented with as children fill their pages.

Retelling fairytale stories visually through drawing prompts using simple classroom drawing tools.

Exploring texture and space with paint on a cardboard texture canvas.

Playing with wet chalk on found logs using the senses and discussion to further understanding of texture, using descriptive language and scientific observation skills.

2022-2023

Sibylla Kiddle School - Grade 2 Class

In this project, students explored the expressive possibilities of watercolour through the lens of Abstract Expressionism to connect with their learning about self and wellbeing. They studied key techniques of colour field painting and action painting through process art play, analyzing the work of artists who employed these methods. To deepen their understanding of colour theory, students created and named up to three unique paint colours, selecting hues that resonated with their personal expression. These custom colours were then used to create a meditative colour field, emphasizing mood and emotion. Building on this foundation, students engaged in action painting using movement and mark making to translate their emotions and energy onto the page.
